Gauff Takes U-Turn On Brad Gilbert's Coaching Involvement After Washington Success

Coco Gauff said a few days ago that her working with Brad Gilbert was only a trial, but she's already sold on continuing.

The American has had a few tough months on the WTA Tour without many good results. Before Wimbledon, Gauff finally hired a new coach opting to work with Pere Riba. The Spaniard was a solid player in his days but is a relatively young coach without much experience.

Because of that, Gauff sought out experienced coach Brad Gilbert to serve as an advisor more than a weekly coach that would travel with her. She admitted that it's a trial and not something that she was willing to describe as permanent, but considering how well it works in Washington at the 2023 Citi Open, she's sold on it being a good thing for the next few weeks.

I mean, we were just trying it this week, but obviously, I think, with the way it's been going, we are going to continue. You know, with anyone, you don't want to say, Let's plan for a long time. I really only had one conversation with him in person, and that was at Wimbledon.

Originally we just, you know, said, Let's see how this week goes, you know, how everything goes. I'm thinking that it's pretty obvious the differences that he and Pere have made in the short amount of time, and I like the way the team dynamic, everyone is getting along, so that's the most important part.

The American will contest another final later today against Maria Sakkari, a very interesting matchup for her. She's had trouble against Sakkari in the past so it will be a good test for her and her new team. She won a trophy earlier this year in Auckland but it's been pretty dry since then.
