Gauff Reveals How She 'Stays Grounded' Despite Fame From Young Age

by Balasz Virag

Coco Gauff is one of the most prominent faces in tennis, especially when the WTA Tour shifts back to North America, but she's not letting any of that get to her head.

The ego is a fascinating thing and the cause of many problems for many people. Some people have too much, some people have too many, and very few have just enough. Coco Gauff tries her best to find balance when it comes to everything in her life, and she spoke about it ahead of the 2023 Citi Open.

Being one of the faces of the sport at her relatively young age adds a lot of pressure, but she's handling it about as well as you can. She's a teenager herself, yet an inspiration to many, which makes it really hard to stay grounded. After all, we all tend to start believing our own hype, especially if you have thousands cheering you on.

Yeah, that was a good question. I really think it comes from my family. They keep my grounded, they keep normal. Also, like the way I am in general, people know me, like everybody who meets me, I don't know, they always say they don't expect me to be this or that. I think it's just because, like, this is what I do; it's not who I am.

Gauff on staying grounded

Your immediate circle has a large impact on you. Nobody can deny it. The old surround yourself with good people exists for a reason and Gauff herself firmly believe that her surroundings contribute to her being pretty normal.

And when it comes to like just being grounded, I mean, really just the people who you surround yourself with. If the people you surround yourself with treat you like how you should and treat you on as equal, then you'll really believe that.

You don't want to surround yourself with people who are yes-men and never tell you anything wrong, because you're not perfect, they're not perfect. I want people to call me out on my flaws. You as a person have to be able to accept criticism from other people.
