Coco Gauff was doubles number one before, while Jessica Pegula was not but she could be if they win the 2023 Wimbledon trophy.
Both Gauff and Pegula had dreamed about being WTA number one and while neither achieved it in singles, Gauff did in doubles. Pegula didn't as of yet but she could if she and Gauff win the Wimbledon trophy.
It's in striking distance, especially after Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova withdrew from the event. It was a good start for them as they won their opening match though it wasn't really a perfect match.
They rarely play a perfect match, singles or doubles, but in the end, winning ultimately matters. It was good to see them back together on the court as the last time we saw them share a court was when they played recently.
Gauff won that match but also crashed out early at Wimbledon while Pegula is still going strong in the singles draw. They faced Kamilla Rakhimova and Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the opening round of the doubles draw, two solid players who are capable of playing some good tennis in both singles and doubles. They proved it in the opening as they were quite comfortable taking it 6-3.
Gauff and Pegula were a bit all over the place in the opening set unable to really get much going. Their play on the serve was a particular concern as their opponents were able to win points rather comfortably. Things changed in the second set as they played better but it was still a messy set overall.
They were up a break two times but lost the advantage both times only to break for the 3rd time late and this time it proved enough 7-5. The final set saw them dominate rather comfortably as they had momentum and confidence after winning a complicated second set.
They took an early break and then added another one to cruise to a 6-2 finish. The final score was 3-6 7-5 6-2 with 3 aces, 8 winners and 9 unforced errors. They are now a few matches away from their maiden grand slam trophy in doubles as well as securing the number one rank. Their next opponents are Detiuc and Gamiz.
