Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula failed to secure the number one doubles ranking after the 2023 US Open, losing to Su-Wei Hsieh and Xinyu Wang.
Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff have been playing together for over a year now, and they still can't get over the hump on Grand Slams. They've won a few WTA events, but they can't win a Grand Slam together, not even the one on their home soil.
It's been going well so far as they made it to the quarter-final where they had to face reigning French Open champions Xinyu Wang and Su-Wei Hsieh. The match was a strange one, one that the Americans started well with an early break, but they kind of faded away as it went on.
You can't really argue that they gave it their all because, at times, it was pretty evident that both Gauff and Pegula were picking their spots. Gauff is in the singles draw and will play Karolina Muchova for a spot in the final.
Pegula is out of singles but has mixed doubles as well, so losing this wouldn't be the end of the world. The chance to become world number one in doubles is a cool thing, but neither is too obsessed with it, and it's still possible, though it will depend on how the rest of the draw plays out.
The match saw Gauff and Pegula take an early lead but then lose it. They would fall behind 4-5 but break back to extend the set. Eventually, we ended up in the tie-break, where they held an early 3-1 lead but lost six points in a row to lose the set.
The second set opened with a loss of serve as well, but they broke back to make it 2-2. They would eventually win that set after a sudden rise in level, winning it 6-3, to take the match into the decider.
However, despite fighting for the world no. 1 spot and the spot in the US Open semifinals, the duo just couldn't overcome their opponents, as Hsieh and Wang went on to win the match 7-6(3), 3-6, 6-4 to reach the 2023 US Open semifinals. If the duo wins the title, Su-Wei Hsieh will become a new world no. 1 in doubles, in any other case, it will be Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula.
