Coco Gauff dismissed talks about cutting her longish nails for the purpose of improving her forehand, saying it doesn't affect her.
For much of this year, Gauff has endured talk about her forehand. It's justified because players have started to pick on that side of her tennis, pushing the ball to the forehand, knowing that sooner or later, problems would arise.
When that happens it's pretty clear there is a problem, and she recognizes that. Gauff admitted more than once that she knows that she needs to work on her forehand but it's not going to happen during the season. Plans to work on it in the offseason are already in place and by then she's simply going to have to ride it out.
Another thing that the American recently talked about were also her nails. Speaking about her style at the Citi Open in Washington, Gauff talked about her new hairstyle, which she will be sporting through the US Open run. The braids will return for the European stretch, but the nails won't be changing.
She laughed off a suggestion that the nails were the cause of her forehand problems explaining that she tried shorter nails and it didn't make a difference so that's why the long nails are not going anywhere anytime soon.
And the nails are still going to be there. I know a lot of people think I need to cut my nails to help me win a forehand better. I'm, like, I did try the short nails, and it did not make my forehand better. These are here to stay. So, yeah (laughter). I need to move my feet. That's what I need to do.
Time will tell what happens with the forehand, but we should not expect the new update version until the new season.
