Aryna Sabalenka fell short of a final at Roland Garros not long ago and she learned a very valuable lesson in that match.
While off the court was a hot mess for Sabalenka, on the court things worked rather well for the Belarusian. She was ploughing through the draw rather comfortably beating all the players without any problems. She was inches away from beating Karolina Muchova as well but then completely collapsed at the finish of the match.
Sabalenka couldn't calm down in time and the match slipped away. It was a devastating loss for the Belarusian who could have booked her maiden Roland Garros final. It was a lesson for her, a hard one but a much-needed one as she revealed ahead of Wimbledon.
Yeah, that was really tough, tough end of the tournament. I was really disappointed with that loss. But then we spoke with my team. It was a good lesson for me. I just had few days off, and then start my preparation for the grass season.
Sabalenka won one of the Grand Slams this year (Australian Open) and narrowly missed out on the second one. She was pressed by reporters about the lesson she learned by losing to Muchova and she made a really strong emphasis on continuing to fight. In some ways, Sabalenka truly gave up in that semi-final, especially towards the end while her opponent kept fighting and came back.
Well, like no matter what, I have to keep trying, not like losing my -- just not losing it easily, you know? Just keep trying things. Not going crazy on court. Understand that no matter what happened, I still have a lot of chances. So that was the main lesson.
Redemption will like occur at Wimbledon as she's the second favourite behind Rybakina for many. She actually practised with Rybakina leading up to the event and destroyed her in that set. She's also a former finalist looking forward to getting back after missing last year and she has plenty of motivation.
