Australian Open Tournament director Craig Tiley called Coco Gauff a commercial engine due to the power of the US market.
Coco Gauff is one of the most popular tennis players around the world. She's also one of the best, which is quite fortunate for tennis as she's a perfect player to market in the coming decade. Her being American only adds to that, and it's why Craig Tiley called her a commercial engine.
The US market is the world's biggest market, and Gauff, as a native, certainly has her country's support. We saw how they all rallied around her when she won her maiden Grand Slam at the US Open recently.
Well, look, we have been fortunate. We came through an era of having great champions, American champions. We have the U.S. players reaching the highest levels of the game. That's why Coco Gauff is going to be so great for the sport. It is the commercial engine of the sport globally. So, I think that's great for the sport, having more of that. I do see some light at the end of the tunnel with that.- Tiley on Gauff's
While Gauff's popularity is certain, she's not the only great player on the WTA Tour. Plenty of them are able to drive the sport forward, like Iga Swiatek however, she doesn't have the market behind her. Poland is quite a big country, but the market can’t compare to the American, even Europe as a whole isn't going to match the US market.
That's no disrespect, there is a lot of great European players, but the market in the U.S. is just so much bigger, and I think that's good for the sport globally.
