Collins Slammed For Telling Sakkari To 'Shut Her Mouth' During Tense Exchange

| by Evita Mueller

Danielle Collins is rather known as a player with a lot of passion in her tennis though she can show some attitude as well.

During a heated clash against Maria Sakkari at the 2023 Canadian Open in Montreal, Collins and Sakkari exchanged words on the court. It happened after Sakkari slammed a ball with Collins pointing out to the umpire how reckless the situation was. Sakkari wasn't impressed and explained that it was harmless, after which Collins told her, 'shut your mouth'.

Eventually, the match continued, and Collins won easily, but the situation created a lot of discussion among fans on X. Plenty of them pointed out how disrespectful Collins behaved, and fellow player Liam Broady chimed in.

It doesn't matter what situation on a tennis court you should never speak to another human like that.

Broady chimes in on the Sakkari - Collins exchange

Obviously, there were some fans that responded to Broady, with one in particular arguing that Sakkari was lying about what she did, essentially downplaying it. Even if that is true, Broady pointed out that Collins could have made her point respectfully.

Fan:
Sakkari was lying and trying to downplay what she just did… shutting her mouth was the best thing possible. Let’s stop feeling pity for millionaire athletes every time they have to deal with a bit of adversity.

Broady:
Don't think it's very hard to just speak to people with respect mate. Now shut your mouth.

It's an interesting situation where both sides could be true. Sakkari likely did downplay how reckless it was. However, Collins was quite harsh in that exchange. It's not the first time she showed attitude on the court though plenty of fans like that sort of approach. The approach is certainly not exclusive to Collins, as we've seen multiple players explode in a similar manner.
