Coincidence Or Not: Schmiedlova Bests Russian Kudermetova In Ukrainian Colors

A very interesting situation happened at Roland Garros when Anna Karolina Schmiedlova produced a huge upset by beating Veronika Kudermetova.

Veronika Kudermetova probably didn't expect to crash out of Roland Garros in the first round. The draw certainly didn't make her worry any more because she was drawn against a player that hasn't been playing that well all year.

Schmiedlova does play her best tennis on clay and was once highly ranked on the WTA Tour, however, the level this year hasn't been good. It was really good in this match as she basically cruised past Kudermetova producing probably the biggest upset in the WTA side of the draw so far.

The curious thing about the match were the colours Schmiedlova wore in the match. Blue and yellow which are traditionally seen as colours of Ukraine in a match against a Russian. Perhaps it was a coincidence and perhaps it wasn't.

Her social media post referencing her kit's colours with a heart emoji certainly makes it seem like it wasn't just a coincidence. Ukranian player Katarina Zavatska posting a picture of Schmiedlova in the kit certainly adds more to the argument that it probably wasn't a coincidence.

Kudermetova herself was recently a topic of discussion after her kit in Madrid showed the logo of a Russian company that is supplying arms to the Russian army in the conflict. Wimbledon reacted swiftly and she won't wear that kit at that event with the WTA also reacting with a review of the rules.

It's quite clear that the Slovakian player wasn't impressed nor intimated as she produced a superb effort beating Kudermetova and ensuring that her kit with the Ukranian colours makes another appearance in Paris. On the other hand, the kit with the questionable logo is on its way to being retired as it certainly won't be making an appearance in the UK in the next few weeks.
