Michael Mmoh was born on January 10, 1998, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to Tony and Geraldine Mmoh. His father is a former ATP player who now works in sports marketing, while his mother is a nurse who now works in Australia.
Mmoh, who moved at age 13 to the USA to train at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, now has American and Australian citizenship. The American enjoyed early success on the ITF Futures Circuit. He won three of those titles before turning 18. This was followed by his maiden ATP Challenger Tour title in October 2016 in Knoxville, where he beat Peter Polansky.
Mmoh played his first ATP Tour matches in 2016 and 2017, competing in seven contests across both years. However, he was unable to win any of those matches, including first-round exits at the 2016 US Open and 2017 Australian Open.
The 2018 Miami Open is when Mmoh created some headlines for the first time. He reached the third round of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament as a qualifier. This was achieved with victories against the future Wimbledon quarterfinalist Christoper Eubanks and the 12th seed Roberto Bautista Agut, before being knocked out by Hyeon Chung.
Unfortunately, Mmoh was not able to immediately build on that success. He only won five ATP Tour matches from 2019 until 2022. The American also struggled for a long period on the Challenger Tour, not reaching a final for over two years.
That drought was ended in April 2022 in Tallahassee. After a strong end to 2022 on the Challenger Tour, which saw Mmoh win two titles, he had some strong results in 2023. At the 2023 Australian Open, he made his first Grand Slam third-round appearance as a lucky loser.
He defeated Laurent Lokoli in the opening round in a five-set thriller before taking out 12th seed Alexander Zverev. His run was ended by fellow American J.J. Wolf. Mmoh repeated that achievement at the 2023 US Open, with two memorable victories as a wildcard.
He hammered the 11th seed Karen Khachanov in the first round. Mmoh then came back from two sets down to defeat John Isner in his compatriot’s final-ever match before retiring. That was followed by a loss to Jack Draper.
