Holger Rune vs Michael Mmoh: 2024 Mexican Open Acapulco - Preview & Prediction

by Zachary Wimer

Holger Rune bested Michael Mmoh once already this year, but what happens when they face each other at the Mexican Open in Acapulco?

This year has been a proper whirlwind for the young Dane, who had some good moments on the court, but most of his headlines came from off the court.

He had about four coaching changes already, with Severin Luthin first joining his team and then leaving. Boris Becker then left abruptly, and to conclude the circle of bizarre moves, he hired Patrick Mouratoglou again.

The third experience with Mouratoglou begins in Acapulco, where Rune played last year as well. He's facing a familiar name in Mmoh, as they played not long ago in Frace. It's a different court and different conditions, so let's see what happens here.

Head-to-head:

The only time they played was recently in Montpellier, and Rune was able to win that match. It was a pretty close match, and while the youngster was better, Mmoh wasn't that much worse. In Acapulco, the difference might be even less because the courts are very slow.

The ball bounces pretty high as well, so it makes it kind of hard to finish off points easily. Expect a lot of long rallies here, and that suits Mmoh as opposed to a quick court with short rallies where Rune could simply overwhelm him.

Prediction:

Mmoh played in Acapulco last year and did pretty well, so I expect a solid outing from him here. Rune played here last year as well and made the semi-final. It's a court he can do well at, but he needs to play a certain way.

He needs to be aggressive, and he needs to hit the ball well. The more indecisive he is, the more trouble he'll have. I can see Mmoh pushing him, but Rune should win in the end.

Prediction: Holger Rune to win in three sets.
