Holger Rune vs Michael Mmoh: 2024 Montpellier Open - Preview & Prediction

by Zachary Wimer

Holger Rune made a winning start at the 2024 Montpellier Open, but his task will only get tougher as he faces Michael Mmoh next.

Rune didn't start spectacularly in 2024, as his Australian Open ended in disaster. He lost to a wild card in the second round while he aimed to go deep and possibly win the event.

It's been better in Montpellier so far, as he won his opening match rather comfortably but now faces a pretty tricky opponent. Mmoh is one of the fittest players on the ATP Tour and pretty stable from the baseline, making him a tough player to beat.

He won't outhit many opponents, but he's solid, making him a dangerous player, especially for a streaky player like Rune. We've seen the Dane lose matches like this before, so keep that in mind.

Head-to-head:

They have never played before, which isn't a huge surprise, as Mmoh generally hasn't played that much on the ATP Tour. They are an interesting matchup on paper because the American could counter Rune pretty well with his style of play.

Holger Rune Michael Mmoh

7 Rank 133
20 Age 26
6-2 2024 W/L 1-0
99-64 Career W/L 24-36

Prediction:

I don't think that will particularly happen because Rune has the tools to beat Mmoh, and the courts play in his favor. It's not the fastest court on Tour, but the ball bounces pretty high, which makes it easy for players like Rune to unload their power.

Whoever serves better will also have a huge advantage. Mmoh isn't a knockout server, but he's capable of generating a good amount of pressure, while Rune can range from unplayable to not-so-consistent.

It's just a matchup that will be decided by how well Rune plays. A good outing for him will be good enough to win easily, but if he doesn't play well, then Mmoh could make it a bit tough.

Prediction: Holger Rune to win in two sets.
