Danka Kovinic is a Montenegrin professional tennis player who was born on November 18, 1994, in Cetinje, Montenegro. After starting to play tennis at the tender age of 7, Kovinic’s talent was evident to see, with her quickly being progressed up the ranks.
Following some formative years on the ITF Tour, the Montenegrin’s first taste of a WTA main draw came at the Budapest Open in 2013. Following two three-set wins in the opening two rounds, it was eventually the tournament’s sixth seed, Chanelle Scheepers, who ended her good run.
This result did mean, however, that she became the first Montenegrin to reach the quarterfinal of a WTA event. Things started really picking up for Kovinic in 2015 when she clocked up her first singles wins at the Grand Slam level, at the French Open and the US Open.
Later that season, she went on another good run, reaching her maiden WTA final at the Tianjin Open. All the while juggling her doubles game too, 2015 also proved to be the year she won her first WTA doubles title too, in Bad Gastein.
Back on the singles side of things, 2016 brought with it her first emergence into the world’s top 50 – number 46, to be precise, which remains her best ranking to date on tour. Struggling for results in 2017-2019, Kovinic dropped back down to a few ITF tournaments in search of more wins and ranking points.
2020 was the year when she returned to the big stage, with the Montenegrin gradually getting back to regular Grand Slam and WTA appearances. The following season saw her reach the final of the Charleston Open, which is a WTA 500 tournament, eventually losing to Veronika Kudermetova.
The career highlights did not stop there, with her reaching her first-ever third-round Grand Slam appearance at the 2022 Australian Open. She went on to match this result at that season’s French Open too, showing that she was not done there in terms of her tennis career.
