Claire Liu is an American professional tennis player who was born on May 25, 2000, in Thousand Oaks, United States. After starting the sport young, she quickly started making progress in junior competitions.

The American enjoyed a stunning junior career, with her winning the Wimbledon girls’ doubles title in 2016, before claiming the girls’ singles title there the following year. She also reached the final of the girls’ singles at Roland Garros in 2017.

Following some impressive results on the ITF Tour, Liu earned her WTA main draw debut at the 2017 Bank of the West Classic, losing to Nicole Gibbs in three tight sets in the first round. There was no time to rue her loss, though, with the American taking on the US Open qualifying rounds just a matter of weeks later.

This went well for Liu, with her qualifying for her first Grand Slam main draw. It would not be until the following season, 2018, that Liu was to record her first Grand Slam win. Beating Ana Konjuh in what was a hard-fought three-set first-round win, her run came to an end in the second round to eventual winner Angelique Kerber.

Despite some promising results on the big stage, the American struggled to make the switch to the WTA Tour permanently in the following years. She was still utilizing the ITF tournaments to get some silverware on board and, therefore, points and confidence before completely committing to the professional tour.

By 2022, she was ready to compete regularly in WTA Tour-level tournaments. In May, she reached her maiden final at the WTA level, eventually losing in the final of the Morocco Open in Rabat to Martina Trevisan.

More progress ensued, with her reaching the third round of a WTA 1000 event at the 2023 Miami Open. 2023 was also the year when she achieved her career-best ranking of world number 52. The search for her maiden title on the professional singles tour goes on.
