Alexander Zverev barely pulled through in R1 but he easily won in the second round against Thiago Monteiro to book the Bastad Open quarter-final.
Alexander Zverev's name has been in the headlines lately though not for tennis. Information about his former partner alleging bodily harm spread like wildfire on social media with many demanding swift actions from the ATP. It's unlikely to come, at least judging by the way they handled the last one and Zverev himself didn't seem bothered by the news in his first match since it broke.
In some ways, the German looked very focused as if he was trying to send a message. It looked very much like somebody blowing off some steam because Monteiro couldn't do anything. Zverev demolished the ball and him for a rather comfortable win in two sets.
Thiago Monterio is no slouch on clay as it's his best surface. He has a very nasty lefty that is capable of doing a lot of damage both from the serve and forehand. Today? Well, today it didn't matter much as Zverev absorbed all of that comfortably smashing him in most rallies.
The first set one lasted precisely 30 minutes and saw Zverev win 6-1. He served really well and that's generally half the struggle for him. Monteiro had a lot of trouble on his own serve failing to win many rallies because Zverev was just sending every ball back.
The second one didn't start off that better for the Brazilian as he fell behind 0-3 rather quickly and once again struggle mightily on his serve. Zverev was just excellent in sending the ball back and forcing Monteiro to search for something he couldn't produce. The Brazilian was essentially playing tennis against a wall, and the German won 6-1, 6-0.
