Alexander Zverev needed a lot of time to battle past compatriot Daniel Altmaier, but he did advance to the 3rd round at the 2023 US Open.

Alexander Zverev has played solid tennis lately winning a couple of good matches in Cincinnati before coming to New York. The start here was pretty good and it continued against Daniel Altmaier though it took a lot out of him.

The match lasted well over three hours and saw them battle in four sets, as the rallies were rather long. Zverev, who complained about the smell of marijuana at the US Open recently, was very good, but so was Altmaier, even though he had fewer winners. The opening set was a very interesting one as we saw them battle in a very up-and-down affair that saw three breaks on both sides.

It ended in a tiebreak, which Zverev won 7-1, but both players were quite off and struggling to keep the ball in play. We saw a better level from both in the second set, at least when it comes to control. There were not as many errors, but it was still quite close, and Altmaier took it.

Zverev wasn't very precise in the second set, and that was mostly the issue in this match. When he did find a better precision, then he mostly looked good. That's what happened in the 3rd set, as he was far more precise while his opponent struggled greatly.

Zverev took that set and then took the final one as well and Altmaier simply struggled to keep up. Both were showing signs of fatigue on the final set which allowed them to finish off points easier. We didn't see as many long rallies as before.

The final score was 7-6(1) 3-6 6-4 6-3 for Zverev who moves on to the next round after a solid effort. He had more winners in this one which proved crucial as the error numbers were fairly similar.
