Alexander Zverev continued to dominate over Grigor Dimitrov, cruising comfortably past the Bulgarian in two sets at the Cincinnati Masters.
Zverev and Cincinnati have a very interesting history considering that the German didn't win a single main draw match until recently. It only happened in 2021 when he went all the way and won the trophy at the ATP 1000 event. The return to the tournament for him has been good so far.
He partnered with Marcelo Melo on Sunday to take out Hugo Nys and Jan Zielinski in doubles, and his first singles match proved equally good. The German has had a good track record against Dimitrov so far in his career, beating him earlier this year at Roland Garros.
This was another good showing from the German, who easily bested Dimitrov in the opening set. The Bulgarian might not have been in the best condition as he dealt with back problems last week in Toronto. Zverev was pretty strong in the opening set, dropping only a couple of points on his serve and never facing a break point.
Dimitrov struggled greatly as he tried to be aggressive but missed quite a bit, producing nine unforced errors. The second set opened similarly to the first one. Zverev was still pretty good on his serve, even though Dimitrov found break chances this time around.
He didn't use them, and the errors kept piling up as he surrendered his serve once more. He then lost it once more to give Zverev the double break lead and from there it was a rather simple journey towards the finish line.
The final score was 6-2 6-2 for the German, who had seven aces, 11 winners, and seven unforced errors in this one. He largely allowed Dimitrov to dictate play, but it didn't work out that well, with 13 winners and 16 unforced errors. Zverev will face Yoshihito Nishioka in the next round.
