Stan Wawrinka didn't play that well recently, but he snapped his losing streak at the 2023 Stockholm Open by beating Borna Gojo.
Wawrinka played really solid tennis indoors last year, and he's back to it with a really good win over Borna Gojo in Stockholm. The Croatian is an excellent indoor player because of his serve, but it didn't really work that well today.
It was an odd match from Gojo, who looked really good in the United States, and also during the Davis Cup, but today wasn't good enough.
He still had chances, but any time he had a chance, Wawrinka would come out on top, and that was the theme of the match. The first set was crucial for the match because both players would benefit from winning it, and that's exactly what happened.
Wawrinka played much better as the match went on, and a lot of that had to do with the confidence of winning the opening set. He took an early break from Gojo but then gave it right back.
The Croatian had some chances in the next few games but never used them and bit him in the backside a few games later when Wawrinka escaped with the opening set 7-5.
The second set wasn't particularly close as Gojo regressed, which wasn't a huge surprise, while Wawrinka played even better. The Swiss dosed himself, though, as he didn't go all out wisely choosing his spot when to attack. After that, he got his break and had no issues holding the lead for the rest of the match.
He didn't serve that well, but he was very good from the baseline, demonstrating far better shot selection than his opponent. Wawrinka finished the match with 20 winners and 14 unforced errors, adding seven aces as well. The final score was 7-5 6-4 as he moved on to face Tomas Machac.
