Tiafoe Stunned In His Opening Match At Davis Cup Against Croatia

Borna Gojo delivered once more for his country by stunning Frances Tiafoe at the 2023 Davis Cup in two relatively painless sets.

This was a fabulous performance from Gojo, who has had moments like this in the past. The Croatian is a really tricky player with a powerful forehand and a really good serve, which is all you really need indoors. He also loves to play for his country, which he proved more than once as it actually became a meme.

Croatia's Gojo is basically a player that can go high on the ATP Tour, and he certainly backed that up on his native soil in Split. Taking on Tiafoe in a must-win match, the big-serving Gojo did just that - served big. He blasted seven aces and his first serve an impressive 88 % of the time to take a very close opening set.

He was hitting the ball really well from the baseline, hitting 13 winners, which was more than Tiafoe had and ultimately proved enough. The opening set went 6-4 for him, and the only break came when Tiafoe was serving to stay in the set. The American didn't see a single break point in the opening set.

He did see some in the second set but couldn't convert them as Gojo managed to keep up the impressive serving performance. He hit his first serve over 90 % in the second set, which reads like an error of some sort, but it's actually not.

He really was that impressive and obviously indoors it made all the difference. Tiafoe played better as well but not in the crucial moments. He actually didn't allow a single break point in the second set but lost the set in the tiebreak because he made some questionable choices.

Opening the tiebreak 0-3 against such a good server on a day when he was playing lights out is a big no no so Gojo was able to end it in two sets 6-4 7-6(6). Not the revenge Tiafoe promised.
