Daniil Medvedev got into it with the French crowd at the 2022 Moselle Open in Metz after a racquet throw earned him a shower of boos.
Medvedev was competing at the ATP 250 tournament in Metz against Stan Wawrinka after the Swiss player defeated Portugal's Joao Sousa in his opening round to set up a clash with the top-seeded Russian.
It was a real fight between the two players who had experience winning a Grand Slam title when a lost point sent Medvedev over the brink. Due to his inability to play the style of tennis he prefers, Medvedev's wrath eventually grew throughout the match, culminating in the final set.
The Russian took out his frustration at his racquet, but that wasn't well received by the French crowd, which booed Medvedev as a result of his actions. Yet, he also didn't like that.
The Russian laughed at the crowd and made a few gestures in response. Some fans pointed out that he was imitating a monkey, with others claiming he was telling the crowd that they stunk.
It was an awkward circumstance that even the commentator brought up. Wawrinka attempted to diffuse the tension, but Medvedev was the target of the crowd's prolonged jeers.
None of that helped the Russian, as he was unable to find his best tennis, and Wawrinka proved to be the better player in the match, winning it in three sets to reach the quarterfinal at the 2022 Moselle Open.
The Swiss player won 6-4, 6-7(7), 6-3, and in the quarterfinals of the tournament in Metz, he will take on Sweden's Mikael Ymer, which presents Wawrinka with a great opportunity to make it to the semifinals of the tournament, where the winner of the match between the fourth-seeded Holger Rune from Denmark and the seventh-seeded Alexander Bublik from Kazakhstan will await.
