Jannik Sinner advanced into the fourth round of the 2023 Italian Open in Rome but for a moment, he didn't know about it.
In his third-round match at the ATP 1000 event in the Italian capital, the 21-year-old took on Alexander Shevchenko. After fighting in three sets, Sinner won the match 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-2 and advanced in front of the home crowd.
However, after winning the last point of the match, Sinner didn't know it was over and he just went right to his towel as he celebrated with the Italian crowd. Only a few moments later, he realized that he won the match and quickly rushed to shake his opponent's hand.
After the match, Sinner, who recently said that he's ready to win big matches, was asked about the moment and what was going through his head when he still wanted to continue, as he disclosed that he thought it was only 5-1 in the third set.
"Yeah, I thought it was 5-1 but it's better that I won already but on the other side, I think I was quite in the zone. I was trying to play every point in a maximum, I missed a couple of points, especially in the second set and then the tie-break."
He also said that it was important for him to focus after losing the second set, and judging by the result of the third set, he was able to do that and that's exactly what he was happy about after the match.
"But you know, you have to cut this part away and then try to be ready for the third set, which I've done I reacted very well and trying to take all the positives. Obviously, I won the match so I'm very happy and I'm happy that I can play one more match here in Rome."
