Daniil Medvedev found himself in a bizarre situation during the 2022
Los Cabos Open in a match against Ricardas Berankis, and he lamented about it after the match.
Medvedev was in action at the Los Cabos Open against Ricardas Berankis. At one point during their match, there was minor confusion as to who won the previous point, so the Lithuanian had a very interesting idea on how to settle the dispute.
He prompted to ask the Russian whether he wanted to play rock, paper, scissors for the point, which Medvedev didnβt really understand at that moment.
It was a hilarious way of settling the dispute and likely would have been a first in tennis, certainly a first for Medvedev, who was disappointed that he didnβt really understand what Berankis was asking him at that moment.
He only realized what he was being asked after the match was over. In the post-match press conference, Medvedev explained his disappointment about how the whole situation unfolded.
"It was a little bit of misunderstanding after the point, which I didnβt see yet, so I donβt know if Iβm right or wrong. I think the referee called out before my shot. Maybe Iβm wrong."
"Ricardas was telling me something, which I finally found out after the match. He was asking to do rock, paper, scissors, which I didnβt understand. I would do it because itβs a lot of fun. I would actually do it; it would be super funny, and after the match, I was disappointed. We couldnβt do it. Next time, maybe we are gonna do it next time."
Medvedev posted that video of his explanation posted by the event, promising to do it next time they play. The tennis world will be on the lookout for Medvedev's next match against Berankis and a potential rock, paper, scissors clash on top of just the regular racket-swinging one.
