Roger Federer mentioned Jannik Sinner, Holger Rune, and Carlos Alcaraz as the players most likely to lead the ATP in the future.
There is a consensus among tennis fans as to who the best players of this new generation are. Alcaraz has established himself as the top name with two Grand Slams in his pocket. The second one, of course, came at Wimbledon earlier this year as he became the first player to beat Novak Djokovic on the Centre Court in 10 years.
Holger Rune is a pretty sure bet, as well as the Dane proved himself a couple of times with some deep runs and won the Paris Masters last year. Jannik Sinner has been around for a while but didn't quite manage to win a big trophy until recently, when he won the Canadian Open.
Those are the players who are likely to lead the ATP forward in the coming years according to Federer, who mentioned them during an interview for the Laver Cup. He also lamented the fact that he didn't get a chance to play against them, something the youngsters regret as well.
Young guys coming through as well. A generation I didn't play very, at all, actually. Rune, Sinner and Alcaraz. Unfortunately, I missed them, you know playing against them. But I think the future looks bright.
None of them actually played at the Laver Cup yet, even though Holger Rune was supposed to play this year. The Dane pulled out with some injury concerns, while Alcaraz opted to focus on the Asian swing.
Federer admitted earlier this year that he tried to get the Spaniard to commit, but it will have to come sometime in the future. The event is sticking around so there will be plenty of chances.
