Stefanos Tsitsipas continued playing some solid tennis by beating Alexander Zverev at the 2023 Paris Masters in straight sets.
This was an interesting matchup, which has delivered some really interesting matches in the past. This one was pretty decent too, but Tsitsipas played better for much of it.
It's not a huge surprise because Zverev looked quite shaky since the start of the event, barely pulling off wins in either of his two matches. The one against Ugo Humbert was particularly tough, and he simply didn't have enough bounce to challenge today.
Tsitsipas jumped out to an early break, which kind of set the tone for the rest of the match. Zverev would break back a bit later as Tsitsipas dealt with some knee discomfort, but it still wasn't enough.
The opening set finished in a tiebreak, which Tsitsipas won thanks to his better shot-making. He was simply better in rallies, hitting more winners, which ultimately mattered. He did serve a bit better as well, but the difference wasn't that major.
The Greek number one jumped out to an early lead in the second set as well, but he didn't have his serve working this time around. It gave Zverev a chance to pressure Tsitispas but he didn't because the Greek was just amazing from the baseline.
He was dominating from the baseline, which didn't give Zverev any chance to exert any kind of pressure. In the end, Tsitsipas calmly cruised towards the finish line as his serve improved towards the end of the second set. The final score was 7-6(2) 6-4 behind ten aces and 37 winners by Tsitsipas.
This is a painful loss for Zverev because he's not yet officially in Turin. Both Hubert Hurkacz and Holger Rune are still in the draw and have a chance to knock him out of Turin, so there is a very good chance that we will see Zverev play next week, either in Metz or Sofia.
