Thiem Disappointed After 'Failing To Reward Himself' At Roland Garros

| by Zlatko Vodenicharov

Dominic Thiem was on the verge of his best win in two years but the Austrian came up short losing the 5-set thriller at Roland Garros.

Thime loves Paris and the city of love loves him. A two-time finalist on the red clay of Roland Garros, Theim returned in 2023 hoping to rekindle the old flame. For a good two sets, he did just that but ultimately the flame was extinguished.

Taking on an in-form Pedro Cachin, Thiem looked as bad as you can look for about two sets. He then looked great for the next two igniting a passionate crowd who wanted to see him win. He didn't in the end losing in five sets and leaving the courts with another disappointment.

This match in a sense was quite poetic because Cachin was the player Thiem played first after making his comeback from the wrist injury. It was in Marbella on the Challenger Tour with the Argentine proving better in that one. Thiem drew parallels between the two matches following this loss.

Yeah, obviously, there's no comparison. Back then I was not ready to play. I shouldn't have even played. Today I was definitely ready to play, to fight. That's what I did obviously.  I was fighting back great, starting to play a bit better. And then, yeah, I missed to do the last step, to reward myself, to give myself a chance to play a second round maybe a little bit looser.

Despite the bad results Thiem is not giving up on his comeback. His love for tennis is still burning strong and he's going to keep grinding believing in his capabilities. He's going to keep working and moving forward with grass around the corner. It was never his best surface but he's going to give it a go signing up for Halle among other events.

The last six weeks were really good. But, yeah, obviously it's not enough yet to play well, to play well in a tournament like that. But, yeah, again, I feel that I'm on the right track again. Today I just failed to reward myself. Yeah, it's just I have to continue.
