Rafael Nadal won his maiden grand slam trophy at Roland Garros wearing a tank top and it's something that is still there in tennis.
We've seen players this year play like that such as Carlos Alcaraz in South America and Alexander Zverev during the clay season and former pro Adriano Panatta is not a fan of it. The Italian spoke to Sette, an Italian magazine explaining how that might be fine for other sports but tennis.
"The tank top cannot be looked at. It's fine for basketball, it's fine for volleyball, but you can't look at the tank top in tennis."
Nadal was playing like that earlier ni his career but over time he dropped the style opting for the more traditional one however he returned to it at the 2019 Australian Open prompting John McEnroe to ask him why. The Spaniard explained that it has to do with functionality in certain conditions:
"I have small issues when I’m playing in very hot conditions when I hit my forehand, so I like to play without the sleeves. It makes me feel younger again."
The trend is not going to go away any time soon but it's not a prevalent trend either. Tennis won't ban it in the future either.
