Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Alex de Minaur: 2024 Italian Open Rome - Preview & Prediction

by Zachary Wimer

Stefanos Tsitsipas seems to be back in a groove at the 2024 Italian Open in Rome, and he hopes to keep that going against groove-killer Alex de Minaur.

The Australian is probably one of the worst players to play when you're sort of discovering your best level. Tsitsipas found it briefly in Monte Carlo but then lost it in Madrid. He's finding it again in Rome, but he'll face a really tricky challenge in de Minaur.

The Australian is so good at covering the court; that his opponents have to invent new ways to play when facing him. The problem is only bigger on clay when things slow down even more, especially since he's recently become quite decent on the surface.

Tsitsipas will have to be really sharp if he hopes to win this match. He obviously can, but it's not going to be easy by any metric.

Tsitsiaps and de Minaur have played plenty of times before, and Tsitsipas has, for the most part, been quite dominant. They have played 11 times so far, and Tsitsipas has won 10 of those matches, though de Minaur won in the most recent meeting in Acapulco this year.

Only three of those matches were played on clay, and Tsitsipas won all of them comfortably. The most recent match on clay between them was played last year in Barcelona, and Tsitsipas won that in two sets.

Obviously, since this match will be played on clay, Tsitsipas is the bigger favorite due to his track record on the surface and the matchup overall. There is just something that bothers de Minaur about the Greek player.

He did win the most recent match, but that was on a hard court. I think we'll get a close one this time, but with the Greek player victorious.

Prediction: Stefanos Tsitsipas to win in three sets.
