Holger Rune is making a name for himself as he's currently one of the best players on the ATP Tour.
The young Dane won 18 of 26 matches that he played in 2023 and although he's yet to win a title, his performances may soon bring one. It can come at the 2023 Munich Open where he's the first seed and a defending champion, after he started his trophy collection on the ATP Tour last year in the German city.
This year, he started his title defence with a victory over Yannick Hanfmann and he continued in the quarterfinals exactly where he left off in the second round. This time, Rune took on Cristian Garin from Chile who is a very good clay-court player.
But the Danish teenager is even better on the red dirt and he showed it right from the off. After holding to love in his first service game, Rune broke his opponent's serve and it didn't take long before he was up 3-1 in the opening set.
A few more games later, the world no. 7 broke his opponent's serve again, and despite struggling to finish the first set off in the longest game of the match, he eventually used his fourth set point to win the opening set 6-2.
Garin proved to be a much tougher opponent in the second set. The Dane broke first but the Chilean found a response immediately and for a moment it seemed that we will head into a tie-break.
But Rune continued to apply pressure on Garin's serve and in the seventh game it payed off as he broke the Chilean again, and this time, he managed to finish it off.
After an hour and 27 minutes, Rune won the match 6-2, 6-4 and he will be already focusing on his semifinal match. Up next, he won't face any seeded player as the third-seeded Alexander Zverev was eliminated, and it will be Christopher O'Connell, the player who beat the German, that will face the young Dane.
