Andy Murray earned his first straight sets win at Wimbledon since 2017 by beating compatriot Ryan Peniston, announcing his trophy candidacy.
Murray played plenty of tennis leading up to Wimbledon in order to prepare as best he could for the event. The secondary goal behind that many matches was to potentially earn a seeding spot at the event which would make his draw easier. He didn't achieve that but he still got a pretty solid draw.
The Brit wasn't shy this year about his Wimbledon goals, lofty goals that include a certain trophy. The Brit believes himself as one of the best players on grass and being the only player at Wimbledon this year to have ever beaten Djokovic on a grass court certainly backs that up. Wilander wouldn't dismiss his chances to make a deep run while compatriot Henman was more sceptical.
He should have fewer people doubting him after this amazing performance. It started off Murrayesque; 2-1 for Andy after 18 minutes of play. Pace picked up quickly after that with the scoreboard showing 6-3 after 47 minutes of play. Murray took it upon himself to be very aggressive and while he wasn't very precise he imposed his will in most rallies which worked in his favour.
The second set was a bagel, not a rare one this year as he served one to Lehecka earlier this year in Doha. It came after Murray's precision improved as he had more winners than errors this time around. The final set was another great one from the Brit as he finished it on a high note against a player who is not on the same level despite some good results on the grass in the past.
The final score was 6-3, 6-0, 6-2 for Murray as he earned his first straight sets win at Wimbledon since 2017. He had 5 aces and 21 winners but also 24 unforces errors. It came as a clear tactic to take control of the match accepting the increased number of errors that would come with it. It's been a while since we saw Murray this dominant at Wimbledon but it's good to have him back.
