Ben Shelton hired his father as coach midway through the ATP season, and the former player did such a good job that he got a Coach of the Year nomination.

Shelton has been working with his father, Bryan Shelton, for a while now, as the former college coach opted to work with his son to help him find his footing on the ATP Tour. To say it worked would be an understatement, as Shelton played his way into the Top 20.

He won his maiden ATP trophy at the Japan Open and amazed crowds worldwide with his level. The best result was obviously the US Open run, where he lost to Djokovic in the semi-final, but essentially, he proved himself.

Some of that credit goes to his father, who centered Shelton nicely after joining his team. The American used to be quite erratic with his play but found his identity as the year went on. The result of that was a Coach of the Year nomination for his father, which makes Shelton quite proud.

"Guy only needed six months to get a [nomination]."

His father has been coaching tennis for many years, though he has mostly worked with college players. As someone with a lot of experience in coaching young players, Bryan knew exactly how to push the right buttons to see his son flourish.

As a former player, he was also quite familiar with some of the other things Shelton needed to do to become a better player. Bryan Shelton's experience and his son's talent were enough to make him one of the best players in the world right now.

Let's see how the team works next year when it's time to defend all those points he earned this year. That's a bit of a different experience.
