US tennis has been tremendous for a long time, but even so, the sport isn't as popular as people might think, according to Tommy Paul.
It's pretty well known which sports reign supreme in the US market. It's American Football and then everything else, with tennis occupying the 6th place according to various studies. We can't really know, but as an American player, Tommy Paul can certainly speak about it.
He's been around tennis for much of his career, and according to him, the sport is barely popular. In fact, he even said at the 2023 Shanghai Masters that 'nobody cares about it,' which is unfortunate considering how much history the United States has in tennis.
I would say I'm excited about it. I know a lot of people would say it's about time or we've been waiting long enough. I mean, tennis is a tough sport and it's probably the 20th most popular sport in the States.
Like, nobody cares about it, and we still have, like, two people in the top 10. So it's kind of cool that we're actually up at the top of the game. I mean, all our best athletes go into other sports, so there's our excuse, I guess.
Even so, the tremendous success of Coco Gauff a the US Open and the rise of Ben Shelton certainly prove that the sport has a bright future. Paul thinks it will help grow the sport in the country and in some ways, it's already been happening.
I think tennis is growing a ton in the States right now. Hopefully, we can get more kids to pick up tennis in the States and play tennis and watch tennis. But I think, like you said, I think in the US Open this year, it was a massive difference. I think people in the States like, they like winners, so the better that the Americans aredoing, the more they want to come out.
