Nick Kyrgios has always had a volatile relationship with his commitment to tennis but he's at peace with what he was able to do ahead of the 2023 Wimbledon.
Kyrgios is a fascinating person, one that leaves very little to the imagination. He was always open and shared his thoughts freely, sometimes too freely. It earned him respect from many, and hate from some but in the end, Kyrgios always maintained that he's just himself and that's one thing you can't really hold against him - he never pretended to be something that he wasn't.
At times he was committed to tennis, at times he wasn't seen on the ATP Tour. It's been a ride, one that is still going on. Kyrgios didn't have a great preparation this year. He played only one match; a loss in Stuttgart. He didn't play in Halle after withdrawing. He didn't play in Mallorca for the same reason and the status of his knee is unknown for now.
I think if anything it’s going to help me, the fact that I've already posted such a good result there and I know that Centre Court so well. I know what I need to do to be successful. I think all the pressure is off me, to be honest.
Even so, Kyrgios is quite confident about his ability to produce his best at Wimbledon. He holds a 20-8 record at the event with a final last year. Another important thing is that he doesn't feel any pressure. He's been the final before and that relieved all the pressure for him.
I think that people always say once you have results, that's when the pressure starts kicking in. But for me, it's been the reverse my whole career. When I've won tournaments or when I've done really well, it's almost the opposite. It's almost like you've proven yourself and now you can actually just relax and have some fun with it.
I don't think I've got anything left to prove in my career to be honest. I’ve beaten some amazing players, won some really big tournaments, [made the] final of a Grand Slam, won a doubles Grand Slam. I feel like now, this is why you work. So you can actually have fun and just enjoy it.
