Andy Murray is back home in London where he began his grass season at the ATP Challenger in Surbiton in anticipation of Wimbledon.
Murray last played on clay with a pretty strong conviction that he wanted to play at Roland Garros for one final time. He opted against that after a string of bad results on clay wanting to focus on grass and it began on Monday in Surbiton.
He faced South Korean Hyeon Chung in the first round beating him in straight sets. The Brit spoke to the media afterwards admitting to feeling really good about being back home and being back on grass which is probably the surface he can do the most damage due to his vast experience on it. When asked if he's among the Top 10 players on the grass right now, he answered yes, which shows how confident he is.
I am aware I don’t have many chances left to play so I am just trying to enjoy it as much as possible now. I know I am capable of good runs. Yes, I think so. I still fancy myself against a lot of the men.
There are certainly some reasons for optimism when it comes to Murray. He played in the final of Stuttgart last year losing to Matteo Berrettini who is one of the best on grass. He also beat Nick Kyrgios en route to the final and he ended up in the Wimbledon final. Those results certainly prove he can do it and he's generally played a bit better this year than last year.
Last year I won against Nick Kyrgios, who made the Wimbledon final, and Stefanos Tsitsipas, one of the best players in the world. And I’m playing better this year than I was last.
