'Not Going To Play Until You Shut Up' - Medvedev Explains Shushing Crowd

Crazy is a pretty spot-on description for what we saw last night between Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev at the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters.

It was plenty of tennis craze and plenty of other things as well. The match saw Medvedev beat Zverev in three sets and it was a very disappointing loss for the German as he had a couple of chances to close out the match. The crowd was very involved as well with Medvedev resorting to shutting them up at one point because they simply would not stop booing. He didn't want to play until they shut up.

I’m like ok, I’m not going to play til you guys shut up. I just discussed the mark. There’s nothing to complain about. After AO Final I was like ‘You can do whatever but I won’t play til you stop.’ As long as there’s sound I won’t play.

The match eventually resumed and it saw Medvedev come back to win it in three sets saving two match points in the process. Zverev served for the match twice but Medvedev never gave up, but according to the German, he was unsportsmanlike on some occasions and he branded him 'one of the most unfair players in the world' after the match.

On the other hand, Medvedev explained after the match that you can come back on clay at any time because the serve doesn't mean as much.

That was a crazy match. He served two times for the match, he probably should have done better, but that is also clay courts. I tried to watch a lot of tennis before playing this tournament, and one thing that I saw is you can come back at any moment. The serve doesn’t count as much, so as soon as someone gets a little bit tight, the match can turn around in one second. That’s what I managed to do.

Up next Medvedev will play against Rune, a very exciting match-up between two great players. Rune favours clay much more than Medvedev and he'll be rested up for the match more so than Medvedev. The Russian is excited about that.

He’s an amazing player. We practised many times. The first time at the Nitto ATP Finals when he was still a junior. Then a lot of times at the Mouratoglou Academy. We practised a lot on clay. I don’t think I ever won a set, but I was playing good today, so I hope to show this good tennis tomorrow.
