Ben Shelton loves to play at big events and he thinks that's got something to do with his tremendous results at some of the bigger events this year, such as the Shanghai Masters.
The best tennis Ben Shelton played this year came at the biggest events. He started off the year with a bang at the Australian Open, booking the second week of a Grand Slam in his second-ever appearance at one.
He followed that up at the US Open, making his way to the semi-final, where he was beaten by Novak Djokovic. Now, he added another solid performance at the 2023 Shanghai Masters.
The American booked the quarter-final by snapping the winning streak of Jannik Sinner with a superb clutch performance. After the match, he shared his thoughts on being so good at the biggest events.
I don’t know what to tell you. Maybe I’m addicted to playing on the big stages. I definitely haven’t had a normal upbringing in the tennis world or first year on tour. It’s kind of been a little backwards figuring things out as we go. I’m just gonna try to keep building & improving each & every week.
He's going to face Sebastian Korda in the quarter-final, and that's a fascinating matchup between two American rising stars, with one of them going to the semi-final.
Korda bested Francisco Cerundolo earlier in the day and has been one of the better-performing players in recent weeks. Shelton is on a tear, however, which is good to see because he seemed to be injured in one of his earlier matches, but so far, it's been going well.
He's currently on a 4-match winning streak, being 9-1 in his last ten matches. With the conditions in Shanghai suiting his style, there is a good chance that the good run continues further.
