Like Mother Like Son: Fritz Replicates His Mother's Success With Quarterfinal Run At US Open

| by Sebastian Dahlman

Taylor Fritz is in the US Open quarter-final, matching the best result of his mother, Kathy May, who was a tennis player herself.

Kathy May was a fine tennis player in her time, reaching a few quarter-finals at the Grand Slam level including the US Open, but obviously, her son, Taylor Fritz had much more success. He's already in established in the Top 10 on the ATP Tour, eclipsing the best ranking of his mother, which was number 10 back in 1977.

His peak was obviously number 5 earlier this year, and he hopes to push that even further. Going deep at the US Open is one way to do that, and he's in the quarter-final, which is the same result his mother had many years ago.

It's the first time he made it to the quarter-final, 45 years after his mother did in 1978. Getting further is the goal, but a matchup against Novak Djokovic is complicated. He may win that match, though it would be a huge surprise, especially after they just played in Cincinnati.

Djokovic won that match comfortably and holds a 7-0 all-time record against Fritz, but best believe that he will try his best. The mother will be in attendance, cheering her son on and hoping he goes further than she ever did.

There is one stat where his mother is still better, and that's trophies won. She won 7 trophies in her career, with Fritz having only six so far. Obviously, he'll overtake her in time, as he's only 25 at the moment, but for now, the mother still leads.

She was ultimately the inspiration as to why he started playing tennis, and it's been a good choice for him. He's the top-ranked American male player right now, which speaks volumes considering how strong of a tennis nation the US is. One of three American men in the quarter-finals.
