Former ATP player Jimmy Connors believes that Novak Djokovic has been prevented from extending his legacy in the past couple of years.
The last few years have been quite tumultuous for Djokovic as he saw quite a few things happen to him. From the disqualification at the US Open to the deportation from Australia on top of all that vaccination talks.
It's been a tough time to navigate all of that and it's had a clear impact on his tennis career. His legacy was forever altered by these situations as he missed a lot of events.
Former player Jimmy Connors thinks that Djokovic has been quite unlucky, as the American revealed on the latest episode of his podcast.
"I'm rooting for Djoker and here's why. I think he's been scre*ed the last couple of years, big time. I'm rooting for him to come through, he's already proven what he is, he's got 22 Grand Slams. He's already proven how great he is and all that, but he has been kept from even extending that legacy."
With the rise of several other players, it seems likely that Djokovic will face more and more problems in creating more iconic moments, even with his impressive run in Melbourne earlier this year.
Repeating that in the coming years will be tough and even Connors doesn't really see him dominate as much in the future. In his mind, this and maybe next year is what is realistic to expect.
"I don't know how long he's going to play He may play this year and one more year and then say, 'I'm done'. You don't know. I'm rooting for him to get through this year and have success because of that."
There is a lot of doubt regarding Djokovic ahead of Roland Garros with his elbow issues as well as generally not-that-impressive play. However, Rafael Nadal's absence will certainly motivate the Serbian.
