Holger Rune advanced to the 2023 Swiss Indoors semi-final after beating Tomas Martin Etcheverry in a very close match, and he admitted that he got super lucky with it.
There was very little doubt about who was better in the opening set as Rune cruised to win it comfortably. The second set though was a bit more tricky for Rune as Etcheverry fought back to secure a final set.
In the third set, Rune pushed hard early but couldn't find the opening. The second half of the second set was played better by Etcheverry, who had some break points but also couldn't quite get it.
In the end, we saw a tiebreak where Rune got very lucky at the end in the two final points. He hit the tip of the net, which bounced into Etcheverry's side of the court to give himself a match point.
After that, the Argentinian double-faulted on match point. It's something Rune called lucky, but he was glad about the win.
It was super difficult and Tomas has played great all tournament and had a super season. It was a fun match to play. I was super lucky at the end, I have never had as much luck in my life.
Of course I am happy to win but I feel for him as I know how it feels myself when these kind of things happen. I am happy with my level. It was a tough match physically, so I am proud of myself.
The win gives Rune a chance to avenge the loss to Felix Auger-Aliassime in Basel last year. It was a final, so it hurt quite a bit, but here is his chance to pay it back. A final is on the line, and getting there would be good for Rune, who struggled a lot in recent weeks.
