Injured Denis Shapovalov Withdraws From 2023 US Open

by Balasz Virag

The horror season for Denis Shapovalov continues as the Canadian has also withdrawn from the 2023 US Open, continuing the streak of withdrawals.

Shapovalov last played at the Wimbledon Championships, where he opted to finish the match standing despite playing with an injury. He looked very defeated after that match, lamenting the injury as unbearable. It's been a terrible season for him as he battled many injuries, with this latest one being quite severe.

At least the recovery seems to take much longer than anybody thought. He had high hopes of returning at the Canadian Open but withdrew to give himself more time to recover. It wasn't enough time to recover for the Cincinnati Masters either, as he also pulled out of that ATP 1000 event too.

He's now out of the US Open, announcing the news on social media platform X even though many fans assumed that his participation was highly unlikely. He's now withdrawn from all events after Wimbledon, and that's generally not a very good sign.

Despite doing everything possible to be 100% healthy in time for @usopen, my knee needs more time and I sadly have to withdraw. That grand slam energy, especially in NYC, is unlike anything else and I’m really going to miss playing in front of the amazing fans there this year!

Shapovalov announces US Open withdrawal.

It's unknown whether Shapovalov will play this year at all, as this trend of withdrawing from events doesn't seem likely to stop any time soon. He was nominated as part of the Canadian Davis Cup Finals team for their matches in September, so that might be a potential returning spot.

It will depend on whether he recovers on time, but he's yet to provide any substantial update regarding a date or event. The defending champions will already be without Felix Auger-Aliassime, so not having Shapovalov would be a significant blow, even though his level would be questionable.
