Stan Wawrinka is going to face Novak Djokovic on Friday at Wimbledon and he's not really expecting to do that well.
Djokovic and Wawrinka obviously had some major battles at Grand Slams many years ago. The Swiss player actually beat Djokovic in two Grand Slam finals, something Djokovic is yet to forgive. He joked that Wawrinka stole two Grand Slams for him, so expect Djokovic to be very motivated in this one.
Wawrinka himself is excited about the match but he doesn't expect to really do well against one of the most dominant players at Wimbledon. While discussing the upcoming match Wawrinka joked that he's happy about winning in the second round as anything else is a bonus.
There's zero opportunity to win Wimbledon for me, I think. I'm happy to have won today again. I think it was great match. I'm playing better each match, and as I say, I think it's an honor to play Novak here.
I was missing that on my career to play him in the Grand Slam in Wimbledon. That's the last I never played him, and it's going to be a difficult challenge. Hopefully I can make a competitive match, but if you will look at recent results, I don't really stand a chance.
Competitive or not, it will be very good to see them face each other at a Grand Slam again. Wawrinka faced Djokovic 26 times in his career on the ATP Tour but won only six of those. The last one was won by Djokovic last year but the one before that in 2019 was technically won by Wawrinka as Djokovic retired. Asked whether he can beat him, Stan said that he doesn't think so.
I don't know (smiling). I have to be on the court, play my best tennis and like I did in the past, but right now it's been a long time I didn't play at that level. So it's going to be interesting. Hopefully, as I say, I can make a competitive match and I can be there to have a fight. But if you look at recent results, it's going to be difficult.
The crowd will likely back Wawrinka though that might not be a good thing against an inspired Djokovic.
