Holger Rune is a rising star on the ATP Tour but he's not a fan of the GOAT debate as he revealed in an interview recently.
Rune was in London this week taking part in the Cinch Championships. Winless on grass before this year, the Dane wanted to get more experience on the surface and possibly earn his first win. He got the former by playing a few matches narrowly missing out on his maiden grass final. He got the latter by beating Maxime Cressy in his opening match at the event.
It's been a good experience overall for the Dane who is not afraid to speak on big topics. He brushed off a reporter in London for insinuating that he faked an injury against Musetti. He also dismissed talks of the next big three claiming it's early. And he's no fan of the GOAT debate between Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Rafael Nadal either.
In a talk with Firstsportz Rune talked about the GOAT debate among other things. It's been a very huge topic for years, even more so lately as Federer's resume is done, Nadal's not playing due to injuries while Djokovic keeps adding more and more milestones. According to Rune, the debate is foolish as all three are legendary in their own ways.
In my opinion, the debate is foolish. We are taking about 3 tremendous players in each their way. A huge inspiration to all 3 for the generations below.
He's right but does that mean that the debate will end? No. The debate will go on because humans are comparing creatures. Since the beginning of time, humans compared everything. It's a competition, a sport in some ways. Fan is short for fanatic which means that most people obsess over the people they're fans of.
Very often that dynamic causes people to tie their self-worth to the person making them feel good or bad depending on the result. Their favourite not being GOAT or the best becomes an attack on themselves which is why any fandom is so toxic.
Any debate on the topic brings out some of the worst in people with insults thrown around lightly. It's exactly why the debate is foolish and it's exactly why it will also continue.
