Nick Kyrgios has flirted with the idea of early retirement quite often, but according to his most recent interview, it's not happening anytime soon.
Nick Kyrgios used to be quite critical of tennis earlier in his career, bashing the sport as something he doesn't care about. While he's mellowed over time, the Australian is still open about not pushing himself too much for the sport.
He's giving it his all, but he's not going as hard as Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and others. Early retirement was always on Kyrgios's mind, and he talked about it publicly, but he seems to be against it, according to his most recent interview with Piers Morgan.
I definitely don't see myself going anywhere in the near future. I want to get back on the Tour and have one to two more really good years, and I think that's possible.
Kyrgios is still pretty young in terms of tennis, as he's only going to turn 29 next year. He could play many more years, but it won't happen. According to his own words, the most realistic outcome is for him to play two to three more years and retire at a pretty early time for a modern-day tennis player.
Even so, Kyrgios is not willing to shut the door to the sport completely. He'd be willing to continue playing at a lesser level if the money is right, using the example of football players who still earn a good amount by playing in 'lesser' leagues like the MLS. He termed it playing at 60-70 %.
And after that, if there are some good leagues that are offering some nice money then I'll definitely look on extending my career a bit.
Nobody knows what the future brings, and he's mostly focused on just getting back to the sport. In his own words, he's a day-by-day kind of guy.
