Novak Djokovic is now only 5 matches away from equaling Roger Federer for most Wimbledon trophies ever as he cruised past Jordan Thompson.
Thompson is a very good player on grass but that's not really good enough when you're facing arguably the best ATP player ever. Federer has the most Wimbledon trophies at this moment, an achievement for which he was honoured this year at Wimbledon but Djokovic could add his name to the mix rather quickly.
With the win over Thompson, he's now only 5 matches away from that achievement and judging by the way he's playing, it will be very hard to stop him. His level already improved from the opener and while Djokovic admitted to not being at 100 % in the first match, he's already close to that.
The opening set of this match started very well for Djokovic who didn't face any problems on his own serve while breaking his opponent once. It was more than enough to secure the opening set but he needed to work a bit harder to win the second set as Thompson was able to keep him away from break points.
That's ultimately the crucial thing and something Djokovic himself did really well in the match. The Serbian had only one break point and he didn't use it. The ensuing tiebreak was played well by both players but Djokovic found something an extra gear and finished it off.
The final set for the most part didn't feature any chances for either player. Thompson was able to resist the attacks of Djokovic while the Serbian cruised through his game. It was just a very well-played grass match from both players.
A crucial thing for Thompson was his serve as he had 21 aces, far more than Djokovic though Djokovic dropped fewer points on his serve overall. Thompson had more winners but also more errors as he tried to find solutions but he never quite got it right. Djokovic finished with 8 aces, 37 winners, 13 unforced errors and the final score being 6-3 7-6(3) 7-5.
According to the draw, he will face either Wawrinka or Etcheverry in the next round.
