Novak Djokovic wasn't happy about losing two matches in a single day, and he certainly didn't want to look for excuses.
Novak Djokovic probably felt really good about Serbia's chances when Miomir Kecmanovic turned around the match against Lorenzo Musetti, sending Serbia into a 1-0 lead in the semifinal tie at the 2023 Davis Cup Finals in Malaga.
He was up early in the opening set but allowed Musetti to battle back and win it. Kecmanovic then turned it around to win in three, which gave Djokovic a chance to win it against Jannik Sinner.
It was a complicated match, but in the third serve at 5-4 and 40-0 on the serve of Sinner, Djokovic probably felt really good. Some 15 minutes later, he would be shaking Sinner's hand after the Italian had just beaten him.
Some two hours later, he did the same thing after Sinner and Lorenzo Sonego beat him and Kecmanovic to secure Italy's win over Serbia.
It was a huge disappointment for the legend, who had a tremendous finish to the year. He didn't want to talk about the reasons why it happened because it would seem like an excuse though he seemed to know why he 'underperformed'.
I don't want to talk about it, you know, because it's going to sound like an excuse. It is what it is. You just have to shake the hands and move on, you know. Obviously this is a tough one to swallow. I was really, you know, trying to hype myself and encourage myself, you know, for this week.
Throughout the entire season, you know, my thoughts were this week, you know, with my Davis Cup team. Yeah, I tried to contribute. I did in the first tie, but today it wasn't meant to be.
Whatever it was, it wasn't good, but he'll be glad to end the season. It's been a long and grueling one and he's not the youngest anymore. Plus, the Australian Open is coming up.
