Not too long ago, we saw Jannik Sinner defeat Daniil Medvedev in an ATP final, and now he will have the chance to do so again at the 2023 Vienna Open.
Jannik Sinner has been playing fantastic tennis in the last month. He produced a sensational effort in Beijing to win the trophy and then followed that up with a few more wins.
His win over Andrey Rublev in Vienna was imposing because he showed resilience and patience, something that's not usually associated with him. It does really look like Sinner is maturing before our very own eyes, and he'll have a chance to prove that against Medvedev later on Sunday.
The Russian took on Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semi-final and expectedly beat him comfortably in two sets. He's been playing really solid tennis for a while as well, but he's also shown quite a bit of weakness in Vienna.
Head-to-head:
It's a matchup we've seen before, quite recently as well. They played each other in the China Open final, and Sinner actually won that match. It was the first time Sinner beat Medvedev, and quite a few people were shocked.
In some ways, I even expect it because I've been far more impressed with Sinner this week. Still, Medvedev leads 6-1, so it's a matchup that suited him in the past.
Prediction:
Besides showing patience and resilience, Sinner has also shown himself to be a really precise server. It's the one thing that actually surprised me the most this week: his consistent serving.
It allows him to dominate the rallies the way he likes to, and that's the recipe you need against Medvedev. Even the match in Rotterdam earlier this year saw Sinner dominate Medvedev for a good portion of the match so there are indications that the matchup is turning in his favour.
It's all about consistency with him. If he brings it, I'd expect him to win. The problem is; that it still doesn't happen every time.
Prediction: Jannik Sinner to win in two sets.
