Carlos Alcaraz vs Matteo Arnaldi: 2023 US Open - Preview & Prediction

by Evita Mueller

Carlos Alcaraz will take on surprise fourth-rounder Matteo Arnaldi for a spot in the 2023 US Open quarter-final.

Carlos Alcaraz is having a really solid run at his year's US Open, hoping to go all the way and successfully defend his trophy. The Spaniard has had a good draw, though he faced some complicated players like Daniel Evans, who pushed him to four sets in the third round.

Eventually, the Spaniard did overcome him with his superb play, which he hopes to bring to this matchup as well. He'll need it as Arnaldi is playing solid tennis, ousting some good players like Cameron Norrie in the most recent match.

Head-to-head:

As they're both young players, we obviously didn't see this matchup before on the ATP Tour. It promises to be a good one on paper because Arnaldi loves to play attacking tennis, and we all know how Alcaraz plays. There should be a lot of great rallies and a lot of winners.

Prediction:

The prediction here is rather simple. Alcaraz should win this match comfortably because he's a much better player. Still, Arnaldi will have some things to say, especially if he brings his best aggressive tennis. Evans showed that Alcaraz can certainly be pushed, but you need to bring your best tennis.

Even if you produce a lot of pressure, you'll still see some spectacular shot-making from Alcaraz, who will find impossible shots and angles. Arnaldi isn't capable of doing the same, as his tennis is more like brute force than anything else.

Still, it should be a good one, one that might possibly give us more than three sets, which would be good for the fans. Neither player made it to the 4th round by chance, so you should expect some good tennis. Obviously, Alcaraz should emerge as the winner.

Prediction: Carlos Alcaraz to win in three sets.
