Carlos Alcaraz will play a couple of more events until the end of the year, starting with the 2023 Swiss Indoors in Basel.
Alcaraz didn't have the type of run he hoped for in Asia, failing to reach the final in Beijing and Shanghai. He had high hopes for this part of the year because there would be no Djokovic, however, it didn't go as well. Even though he held an early lead, Jannik Sinner proved better than Alcaraz at the China Open.
He won the first set against Grigor Dimitrov in Shanghai but was again beaten, which was disappointing. It's been quite a whirlwind of emotions because his tennis has been pretty decent, but he can't turn that good play into winning matches.
After his loss to Dimitrov Alcaraz spoke about the need to practise more and tighten up before the season concludes, and he plans to do that in the coming weeks. He also confirmed his next event, and that will be the Swiss Indoors.
I have to practice a hundred percent in these weeks before Basel, that's the next tournament for me, so I'll try to make my best in that tournament.
The Swiss Indoors in Basel begins on October 23rd, which is about ten days away, so he'll need to really focus on practicing if he hopes to finetune some of these things that cause him to lose matches. After that, Alcaraz will play in Paris and the ATP Finals, of course.
He still hopes to finish the year as number one in the world, and it might happen, but it's a lot less likely after these early losses in Asia. Djokovic still has a huge lead, and despite defending a lot of points, he is the favourite to finish number one right now ahead of Alcaraz.
