Matteo Berrettini recently said that he's not the closest with Jannik Sinner, however, in a new interview he corrected that initial comment.
Berrettini was talking about his experiences in the Davis Cup admitting that he's closer to the other players as opposed to Sinner which raised some questions among fans about whether they are close at all. It was a quote that was mildly misrepresented as he never said that they weren't on good terms.
Ahead of the 2023 Italian Open in Rome, Berrettini once again spoke about Sinner admitting that they are pretty close sporting-wise having regular contact and practising together. They have never played against each other on the ATP Tour which is a bit interesting considering that they've been around for a while. Speaking on the ATP Tennis Radio Podcast, the Italian said:
I'm a little bit older but I feel he's going so fast that I don't consider him like someone younger than me. He has achieved so much already. Yeah, I think in general, our relationship is great, we text each other, we practice together, and when we have the chance, we play doubles together, so it’s really like a healthy relationship in sport.
Berrettini further expanded on their relationship admitting that he got better thanks to Jannik and being able to be around him. It's pretty high praise for somebody who is a couple of years younger than Berrettini but not too much behind in tennis terms.
Like we help each other to raise our level and thanks to him, I'm also improving my game. I think it's something we need in order to get better. That’s why it would be even better to play against each other. I really like Jannik as a guy. We are both lucky to have each other on tour.
He's currently away from tennis but he hopes to return as soon as he can to change his fortunes.
