"As for media, I couldn't care less" - Kyrgios dejected after loss to Hurkacz

Nick Kyrgios was hugely dejected after losing to Hubert Hurkacz at the 2022 Canadian Open, and that was evidently clear by how he did the post-match press conference.

Kyrgios hasn't had the best relationship with the media in the past because the Australian wasn’t really keen on how he was presented. For the longest time, Kyrgios was treated as a sort of villain on the tennis tour.

He didn’t help his case with some of the things he did, but he never felt okay about being branded the bad boy of tennis, among other things. He’s been quite open and adamant about his dislike for that type of description.

Even with his previous disagreements with the media, Kyrgios generally tends to do well during press conferences. He can be quite chatty and very honest, which makes for some really interesting moments.

One of those happened recently at the Canadian Open after he lost to Hurkacz in the semi-finals. It was a very close match. Kyrgios wanted to win, but ultimately, he failed to do so, failing to make the final of the ATP Masters 1000 event.

In the press conference, Kyrgios gave short responses to all of the questions he was asked, looking disinterested. It finally got a media member to ask Kyrgios why he was the way he was, and the Australian simply said that he didn’t care for the press conference and would rather not be here.

"As for media, I couldn't care less. I do this because I have to be here, and I don't want to get fined, so…I mean, it's routine. I don't really enjoy it, to be honest. I'd rather not be here right now."

Moments like that mostly depend on his mood. At times, the Australian can certainly enjoy chatting with the press room, but at times, he doesn't, and this time, he wasn’t for obvious reasons, which was losing a close match.

Obviously, he was not happy about the loss, but he will have a chance to do better in Cincinnati in a few days. After this solid quarter-final run, Kyrgios will return to the Top 30 on the ATP Tour on Monday.
