Andy Murray won't be competing at the 2023 Roland Garros as the Scot withdrew from the Grand Slam tournament.
It's been quite some time since Murray last competed at the Roland Garros and even longer time since he won his last match in the French capital. His last participation came in 2020 and last win back in 2017, and that won't change this year.
And the fact that Murray hasn't won a match in Paris since 2017 doesn't apply only to the Roland Garros. The three-time Grand Slam champion also struggled at the Paris Masters, not winning a single match since his triumph in 2016.
But now, after a turbulent clay-court season, Murray finally made a decision about his participation in the second major of the season. There was a solid chance that he would have been one of the seeded players, but he still made the decision to withdraw from the tournament.
Murray had a really bad start to the clay-court season and things were looking really bad. However, he then recorded a historic triumph at the ATP Challenger event in France, and all started looking a bit better, as he even declared that he wants to compete at the Roland Garros because it may be his last time.
Yet, two disappointing losses followed for the Scot. He first lost to Fabio Fognini in Rome, before being totally dominated by Stan Wawrinka at yet another ATP Challenger tournament. That made Murray reconsider his previous claims as he announced that the Roland Garros decision will come 'in a few days'.
Those few days have now passed and we know that Murray won't appear at the 2023 Roland Garros. On the other hand, he can start preparing for the grass-court part of the season early, as he will want to repeat his previous success at the Wimbledon Championship.
